What makes it work for someone who isn't technical
- One thing to remember. Tap Ctrl + Space, talk, tap again. There are no modes to pick, no window to find, no buttons.
- Big, plain words. The app says “Listening” while it listens and “Typing” while it types. That's it.
- Nothing to log in to each day. They sign in once with a code we email them. No password to forget.
- It stays out of the way. Close the window and it keeps working from the corner of the screen.
- Their language. Over 60 to choose from, and a mode that follows them when they mix two.
Setting it up for them
- Download JustSpeak on their computer: Mac or Windows. On Windows, this page shows the warning they'll see and what to click.
- Sign in with their email. They get a 6-digit code; type it in.
- Say yes to the microphone (and on a Mac, to Accessibility). The setup asks for exactly what it needs and nothing else.
- Add the grandchildren's names to the Dictionary so they're spelled right.
- In Settings, turn on Open when my computer starts. Then try it together once in an email, and leave it.
Things that go wrong, and don't here
JustSpeak never types while someone is still talking, so there's no watching words jump around. It records while the shortcut is on, then types the finished sentence once. If they wander off mid-sentence, it stops after ten minutes and types what it heard.
If they need help
Email support@justspeak.live and a person replies. If a disability or painful hands are part of why you're here, mention it and we'll take 20% off any plan.
What it costs
Start with 30 free minutes, no card. After that it's $8 a month, $59 a year, or $99 once for life. Every paid plan is unlimited dictation on your own computers. If a disability or painful hands make typing hard, email support@justspeak.live and we'll take 20% off any plan.
Questions
- Do they need to know about the app at all?
- Only the shortcut. With “Open when my computer starts” switched on, it waits in the corner from the moment the computer is on. The window only matters for setup and settings.
- Can I set it up remotely?
- Yes, over any screen-sharing call. The whole thing is a download, a sign-in code, and two permission prompts.
- What about an old computer?
- Mac: macOS 11 or later. Windows: 10 or 11. The app is small and light; most of the work happens on our servers.
- Does it need the internet?
- Yes. Your recording goes to our speech partner, comes back as text, and isn't kept. There's no offline mode.
- Is my audio stored?
- No. Recordings are turned into text and then dropped. Keeping a history of your transcripts is optional and off by default.
- How long can I talk in one go?
- Up to ten minutes. At nine minutes a small notice warns you, and at ten JustSpeak types what you've said so far.
